Hair treatments for mature hair

Since our hair changes over the years, hair care manufacturers have developed many special products for the 50 + generation. However, the fact is that many of them contain chemicals and therefore can even harm the hair in the long term. Yet it is quite easy to make a hair care yourself. And the best thing is: much of what is needed for the production is already in our household anyway!

Why does mature hair need more care?

The body produces less and less melanin with age, causing the hair to lose its color and become grayer. The missing pigments are replaced by air bubbles. This changes the hair structure and the gray hair is suddenly more prone to split ends and hair breakage. The hair loses elasticity and is less malleable. Therefore, it is especially important to pay attention to good care in everyday life. This includes a weekly treatment with nourishing ingredients. For every hair type, there is a suitable mixture that makes the mop of hair shine again.

The right application

Granted, it is of course more convenient to simply buy a hair treatment in the store. But with just a few steps you can make a suitable care yourself in a short time. In addition, you know what's in it and can adapt it to your individual needs. Since most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen, you can even save money. Just try it! Before you apply your homemade treatment, follow these tips:

  1. Wash your hair beforehand. They should be towel-dry before application. Then carefully apply the treatment to the lengths and ends and work it in thoroughly.
  2. If available, wrap your hair with cling film afterwards. A plastic cap or shower cap is also ideal. Afterwards, a towel around it, because the cure works best in warmth.
  3. Leave the treatment on for about 30 minutes. Shorter is also possible, but this can weaken the effect.
  4. After the application time, wash your hair thoroughly with a shampoo. Remove all residues. For oily treatments, several washes may be necessary.
  5. Please always make the cure fresh, it usually lasts only one day.

Dry and straw hair

Heat, chlorinated water, daily washing and too hot blow-drying can dry out mature hair. Then the cure should contain particularly nourishing ingredients so that the hair looks healthy again and shines beautifully. A cure with avocado, olive oil and lemon juice gives the hair a moisture boost. To do this, cut the avocado in half, pit it, scoop out the flesh and mash it. Mix with two tablespoons of olive oil (grape seed oil also works) and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Tipp

If you need to speed up the preparation, you can also just mix a tablespoon of honey with a tablespoon of olive oil and apply to the hair

Damaged and brittle hair

Due to frequent coloring or tinting of gray hair and daily styling, the hair is broken? Then it needs an application with good care substances that rebuild the hair and improve the hair structure. Here, a repair attempt with egg yolk and coconut oil is worthwhile: take an egg and separate the yolk from the white. Heat some water in a saucepan, fill three tablespoons of coconut oil in a bowl and put it in the saucepan (note: no water should get into the keys). When the coconut oil has become liquid, take the bowl out again and stir the egg yolk into the coconut oil with a whisk.

For split ends, you can try an almond oil-banana treatment. Mash a banana and then add two to three drops of almond oil. A mixture of four tablespoons of honey, an egg and a teaspoon of lemon juice also has a nourishing effect on split ends.

For porous hair, a rinse with beer has also proven effective. The substances contained in it strengthen the hair and repair minor damage. Simply pour a little beer over the hair after shampooing, massage gently and rinse thoroughly after a few minutes.

Typical in old age: fine and thin hair

You have fine hair that falls together quickly? The hairstyle no longer holds properly? Then you need a hair treatment with milk and hazelnuts: Put 250 ml of milk, a tablespoon of sugar and 50 g of ground hazelnuts in a bowl and mix to a spreadable mass. The light texture will not weigh down the hair unnecessarily.

Also test a hair treatment with aloe vera, yogurt and honey. Mix four tablespoons of aloe vera gel with one tablespoon of natural yogurt and one teaspoon of honey. After the exposure time, rinse the hair carefully to remove the honey completely.

Colored and tinted hair

They need special care, which provides the hair with enough moisture after coloring and ensures that the color lasts longer. A mixture of macadamia oil, avocado and castor oil is perfect for this. Mix a teaspoon of macadamia oil with the pulp of half an avocado. Then add two drops of castor oil and a squeeze of lemon. Ready is the paste for shiny hair full of luminosity!

What to do for hair loss?

In the early stages, a hair mask with coffee, yogurt, egg and olive oil can help curb hair loss in men and women as they age: Put two tablespoons of plain yogurt in a bowl and mix it with one egg. Then mix in five tablespoons of olive oil. Finally, add one tablespoon of ground coffee powder. Mix vigorously until you get a thick paste and then massage it into your scalp.

If you spot some walnut leaves while out for a walk, you can make a decoction out of them. The leaves are known to strengthen hair and stimulate growth. You'll need about two handfuls of walnut leaves. Cut them into small pieces and put them in a pot with half a liter of water. After leaving the broth overnight, simmer it on the stove for three minutes the next day. After that you can take out the leaves. Use the decoction as a rinse after washing your hair.

Sensitive and flaky scalp

For those affected, it is unpleasant when the scalp itches and dandruff forms. The hair treatment should be particularly mild and gentle. Try an olive oil and yogurt treatment: Mix 150 g of natural yogurt with one tablespoon of honey and three tablespoons of olive oil. Then separate one egg and add the yolk. Mix everything thoroughly and gently massage into the hair. The milk protein and honey soothe and moisturize the scalp.

Conclusion

Mature hair needs that little extra care. But good care does not have to be expensive! Homemade cures can be a real alternative to the products from the trade. Of course, no miracles should be expected overnight. But with consistent use, they provide the hair with important nutrients and give resilience, shine and good stylability.
