A bedroom to dream in

The bedroom should be a place of regeneration and relaxation. But unfortunately, all too often objects and furniture end up here that make it look untidy and uncomfortable. What's more, the bedroom is less frequently redecorated than the other rooms in the home. Fancy a new look? It doesn't have to be a completely new room.

Finding your own style

White is probably the dominant colour in most bedrooms. It makes a room look bigger, gives it lightness and matches every other colour. This opens up countless possibilities when designing the rest of the bedroom furnishings. For people who find this yawn-inducing, there are plenty of ideas for the bedroom at home in magazines or on the internet: romantic vintage furnishings with delicate wall colours, luxury bedrooms in gold and brown, Scandinavian design with simple furniture, modern interiors in cool tones, natural flair with rustic wooden furniture, and many more.
It is by no means necessary to stick to one furnishing style. Contrasts are also interesting, such as a mixture of modern and antique elements or a combination of warm and cool colours.

As you make your bed, so you sleep

During sleep we regenerate and gather strength for the next day. A suitable sleeping surface is therefore crucial for a pleasant night's sleep. Especially if you suffer from back pain, a box spring bed not only gives your bedroom a visual update, but also adds a large portion of comfort. Many models also have practical storage space under the bed. If you opt for a classic bed frame, you will need a matching mattress. The most common types of mattress are cold foam, innerspring, memory foam and latex mattresses. You should consider these factors when choosing a mattress:

  • Firmness level: mattress firmness level 1 (H1) is suitable for people under 60 kg body weight, firmness level 2 (H2) for people between 60 and 80 kg, firmness level 3 (H3) for people between 80 and 120 kg body weight and firmness level 4 (H4) for people who weigh more than 120 kg. However, some people prefer a rather harder mattress to sleep on despite their low body weight. And many side sleepers like it soft. So be sure to try it out before you buy!
  • Preferred lying position: Spring mattresses are ideal for back and stomach sleepers. Cold foam mattresses are suitable for people who change their sleeping position frequently. Latex mattresses are a good choice for side and stomach sleepers and memory foam (also called visco foam) is suitable for any sleeping position.

A bed linen for slumber

With beautiful bed linen, you can transform your bedroom without much effort. There is a large selection in the shops, from plain designs to floral patterns and elegant ornaments. The material of the bed linen should correspond to your personal needs, i.e. take into account aspects such as the tendency to sweat or the season. But what is actually behind terms such as Mako-Satin, Perkal or Seersucker?

Cotton bed linen absorbs moisture well and is resistant to heat. That's why it can be washed at 60 degrees. Linen is cooling in summer, anti-bacterial and absorbent. Seersucker has a kind of crepe look, is non-iron and is considered particularly durable. Percale is a hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant cotton fabric with a soft feel. Silk is breathable, warm in winter and cool in summer. Mako satin is also pleasant on the skin in summer and has a beautiful sheen. Jersey is absorbent, tolerates high temperatures and can even be put in the dryer. Beaver is considered breathable, temperature-balancing and warming. Microfibre bed linen dries quickly, is lint-free and inexpensive. Renforcé has optimal moisture absorption and is very hard-wearing. Terrycloth bed linen is quick-drying, absorbent and breathable.

Completely new tones

With a coat of wall paint, you can bring a breath of fresh air into your bedroom. Colours set the mood! Brown tones have a cosy effect, green provides freshness and blue lets us relax. Red tones make you cheerful and should only be used selectively. If you prefer neutral colours, you can create tension with a combination of several colours from the same colour family (e.g. different shades of grey). Especially the area behind the headboard of the bed is predestined for an attractive wall design. You can visually enhance your bedroom with circles, stripes, shelves, pictures, collages, tattoos, sayings or poems. Of course, you can also use creative wallpaper with a stone look, geometric shapes, floral patterns, marble imitations or 3D effects. However, you should only set isolated accents with these. True to the motto: less is more.

A benefit for the feet

Of course, the floor must also be included in the design. It should not only look good, but also feel good. Depending on the interior style, there are various options for the floor covering. Parquet has a cosy, stylish look and is very popular, especially because it is warm to the feet. Laminate is hard-wearing and scores points with a wide choice of decors. Linoleum is available in many different colours. It is also antibacterial and extremely robust. Vinyl flooring is easy to clean, durable and has good sound-absorbing properties. Tiles are easy to clean and very durable. However, they quickly appear cool and uncomfortable in the bedroom.

Carpet flooring is still popular with many people because it radiates cosiness and warmth. It also outperforms other floor coverings when walking barefoot. Velour, loop and wool carpets are common for the bedroom. The colour should ideally contrast with the wall colour. That is, a light carpet goes well with a dark wall, and a dark carpet with white or pastel paints. Carpet tiles can even be used to create individual patterns. And if there is ever a stain, you can easily replace the individual elements.

Important supporting actors in the bedchamber

Just no bare windows! Curtains and drapes can be both privacy screens and eye-catchers. Even blackout curtains have shed their hotel image and look really great these days. Plants liven up the room and make the bedroom look more homely. Green plants such as monocots, yucca palms, aloe vera, birch figs or green lilies are good for the indoor climate. They clean the air of pollutants and are also very decorative. However, make sure that watering does not cause waterlogging. This promotes mould. And that is most unwelcome in the bedroom. A mirror on the wall can also be an eye-catcher if the bedroom wardrobe does not have one. However, the placement should be carefully covered to avoid unpleasant light reflections caused by sunlight. An alternative can be a standing mirror, because its position can be changed at any time.

A bench at the foot of the bed or a chair in the corner of the bedroom can serve as a clothes rack and seat when getting dressed. If you choose a comfortable armchair, you also gain a retreat for reading. A cosy rug in front of the bed ensures warm feet after getting up. This can be a classic high pile or short pile model or a fur rug. For a good start to the day, you also need a suitable alarm clock. But every day, a loud beeping alarm startles people out of their sleep. If you choose an alarm clock with a melody instead, it makes it easier for your body to wake up. In the meantime, even alarm clocks with animal and nature sounds as well as light alarm clocks with sunrise simulation are available.

Good lighting conditions in the bedroom

The effect of the bedroom is also influenced by the lighting. The basics are the ceiling lamp and bedside lamp. With dimmable hanging lamps or ceiling spots, the brightness can be adjusted to individual needs. It is best to choose warm white light for the bedroom to create a cosy atmosphere. Other light sources are not a must, but they round off the overall picture harmoniously. For example, a chain of lights behind the bed can create a romantic mood or a floor lamp can illuminate the reading corner. Indirect lighting is also possible with LED light strips around the bed or behind the wardrobe, illuminated pictures or a suspended ceiling with a starry sky.

The optimal room climate in the bedroom is between 16 and 18 degrees with 40 to 60 percent humidity.

Electrosmog is the term used to describe magnetic, electric or electromagnetic fields that are generated wherever electrical devices are running. This radiation comes from laptops, televisions and mobile phones, among other things, which is why these devices should be avoided in the bedroom. Keep clock radios as far away from your head as possible. Electrosmog can cause headaches, restlessness or disturbed sleep in sensitive people.

In a waterbed you automatically lie correctly. It adapts to the shape of your body and allows you to lie without pressure points. This relieves the spine and is easy on the joints. The bed can also be individually tempered: Cool in summer and cosy in winter.

In summer, light cotton sheets are suitable for covering. They absorb perspiration well. A lukewarm shower before going to bed is also helpful. When you let the moisture evaporate on your skin, your skin automatically cools down. Cooled socks also provide a freshness boost. Put them in a plastic bag and put them in the fridge for a few hours.

Ventilation reduces emissions and pollutants in the indoor air and lowers the risk of headaches and mould. The warmer it is outside, the more often you should ventilate or cross-ventilate. This should be 2 – 4 times a day for between 5 and 30 minutes.

Conclusion

The right bed and a good mattress are essential for a good night's sleep and personal well-being. But only with colourful accents, exciting decorative objects, exciting bed linen and the right lighting can you transform your bedroom into an oasis of relaxation. This way you can escape the outside world and relax in the land of dreams!
