Stair lifts open up new ways for people with physical limitations and disabilities: If it was previously impossible to overcome stairs between floors, a stair lift installation is the solution. The so-called lift classes are seat lifts, platform lifts for wheelchair users and outdoor lifts. But lift installation, despite its qualities, brings challenges:

  • Selection of the suitable lift system for the individual situation: What is possible? What is worthwhile in my case?
  • Deciding on a purchase model: renting, second-hand or buying new?
  • Financing the lift: Is it possible to apply for subsidies and cost absorption in order to meet the sometimes enormous costs?

With our guide, we replace the challenges with opportunities; opportunities for a self-determined and comfortable life in your own four walls, regardless of the extent of your physical limitations! In addition, with our configurator we give you the opportunity to optimise the complicated and lengthy process of stairlift selection and purchase: Simply answer the questions and receive information and free customised offers.

What are the benefits of a stair lift and is it even an option in my home?

A stair lift means quality of life. Independent. Happy. Mobile. Active. Varied. The lift creates the perspective of remaining in one's home and probably familiar surroundings instead of having to move to assisted accommodation in the long term. But is installation even possible? What are the legal hurdles? What are the requirements for stairs and the surrounding area that necessitate the construction of a lift system?

Areas of application for the stairlift

The stair lift outside enables accessibility that goes beyond your own four walls:

  • Freedom of movement in the garden
  • Independent leaving of the house
  • Maintenance of the outdoor area

The resulting independence gives users a better attitude to life and a more flexible way of spending their time. At the same time, the stair lift outside increases safety standards. This is because outside there are risks such as the danger of slipping due to wetness and icy surfaces in winter. In order to cope with outdoor use, these lift systems have a robust and weatherproof finish. In addition, a cover is included in the scope of delivery to protect against extreme weather conditions.

Is a stair lift possible? Stairlift in an apartment building put to the test

The regulations for the installation of a stair lift differ in the federal states. According to[nbsp]§554a paragraph 1 BGB, the tenant has the right to demand the landlord's consent to barrier-free access. This means that the landlord must generally agree to a conversion. Exceptions arise, however, if other tenants have opposing legitimate wishes and the interest in leaving the flat in its original condition outweighs the interests of the tenant with the wish for barrier-free access. In addition, the landlord is released from his obligation to have the barrier-free access removed after moving out if there is no sufficient security; this means that he can make his consent dependent on whether the rent security (deposit) is sufficient.

Hinweis

The so-called rent deposit is not suitable - in German: reicht nicht - to cover the dismantling of a stairlift.

In most cases, the landlord is willing to talk . The same applies to the other tenants. Because of the diverse design options of the lift systems and different types of lifts, compromises can be found between the parties. In addition, the stairlift providers actively help by taking on a mediating function - both between you and the other tenants and between you and the landlord!

The local conditions: Ensure space and safety

Once the first hurdle of the landlord's approval has been cleared or a property of one's own has been given, spatial criteria play a role:

  • Load-bearing capacity of the wall or stairs
  • Spatial clearance at the staircase
  • Height of the walls

Installation on the wall requires sufficient load-bearing capacity. A corresponding test is carried out by specialists of the manufacturer on site. If deficits are found, there are two possibilities: One is to upgrade the wall and the other is to install a tread on the steps. The latter requires a massive and wide staircase with load-bearing steps. This brings us to the next point...

The sufficient stair width varies with the lift system. You can find out the minimum dimensions for the individual systems in the following section Stairlift types. A classic sit lift, for example, requires one metre of stair width; space is also needed at the beginning and end of the stairs. One requirement is to prevent the stairlift from blocking the hallway or corridor. For this reason, the stairlift is calculated generously and individually in order to maintain full comfort, freedom of movement and aesthetics within one's own four walls, by integrating the stairlift into the other furnishings of the home in a space-saving manner. If space is limited, there are stairlifts that can be folded away when not in use.
The height of the walls is also important to ensure that the stairlift can be manoeuvred safely and that the user can stand up without danger. A minimum wall height of one metre is specified for all lift systems. Walls that are too low would have to be extended, which would require extensive changes to the building structure. For this reason, a stairlift system is not installed if the wall height is less than one metre.

Stairlift types: Lift systems for all cases!

The different lift systems are used to enable adaptation to the respective needs of the user and the local conditions. The variety of stairlift types is the reason why there is a suitable lift system for the majority of properties. You don't believe it? Then take a close look at the following sections and find the right solution for you!

A rough subdivision of the stairlift types is first of all made into the categories seat lifts and platform lifts. Seat lifts are used by people whose mobility is largely intact. Platform lif ts are used by wheelchair users and people who have serious problems getting up and sitting down.

Seat lift and curve lift

The seat lift is a classic among stair lifts and is available in two versions: One is for straight stairs, which is simply called a seat lift. On the other hand, there is the curved lift. Here the name says it all: this lift is able to travel around winding stairs as a 'stair lift spiral staircase'. The components are the same for both seat and curved lifts.

Component Use Description
Seat
  • Upholstery for comfortable sitting
  • Swivelling seat optimises turning and standing up in case of pelvic disorders
Armrest(s)
  • Arm rest during travel and support for standing up
  • Includes joystick and emergency switch for easy control of the lift while seated
Footrest(s)
  • Secure storage for the feet while driving
  • Sensors to detect obstacles trigger emergency stop if necessary
Seat belt
  • provides a firm hold at all times during the ride
  • modern seat lifts do not start until the seat belt is fastened
Controls
  • Everything is possible, from a simple joystick on the armrest to smart-home functions (e.g. control via smartphone).
  • Remote controls are always included to retrieve the stairlift when it is up and you are down.
Drive motor
  • includes battery to power the stairlift
  • With power supply to recharge the battery.
Rails and tubes
  • Depending on the model, the stairlift is guided along the stairs via one of the two.

Seat lifts and stair lifts are suitable for mobile and independent persons. They are used to assist in climbing several steps if this is unreasonable or difficult. They require a person to:

  • can stand up and sit down without difficulty,
  • is able to walk on level surfaces, and
  • has an unimpaired cardiovascular system.

People with severe limitations, such as people with walkers, with medical equipment for transport and wheelchair users, need a platform lift. This has a higher load capacity to also transport medical equipment and the person with a walker or wheelchair.

Platform lift

LADE ...
©Bild von Plattform-Treppenlift / Lippe Lift GmbH 32657 Lemgo auf Alterix

The platform lift is a mobility variant for wheelchair users and people with other loads. A higher load capacity and a high pick-up area compared to other lift systems are the most striking features. Electric ramps can be folded down and allow comfortable access to the platform.

Primarily intended for people with disabilities, everyone in the household benefits from a platform lift. In addition to the wheelchair user, heavy shopping, furniture and objects can also be transported between the provided levels by the platform lift. Restricted purely to the medical context, platform lifts are used for wheelchair users and people with heavy medical equipment or walking aids.

A stair width of at least one and a half metres is required for the installation of a platform lift. This width results from the higher dead weight as well as the determined capacity of a platform lift. In order to ensure that the platform can be moved, a maximum gradient of the stairs of 70 degrees is permissible. If the platform lift does not guarantee this, the lifting platform is an alternative.

Stand-up lift

While a basic characteristic of platform lifts is that they are highly load-bearing and wide, the standing lift stands out as a special form of platform lift due to its narrow shape. The standing lift does not require the space for wheelchairs or walkers. Its sole purpose is to transport a person - standing up.

Why do people need a stair lift if they can stand?

When people experience discomfort sitting down and standing up, a stair lift can be a beneficial solution. In contrast to the sit lift, it offers people with joint stiffness and arthrosis the possibility to climb the stairs safely and while standing. There is even a compromise for people who find standing and sitting equally difficult: The lean-to lift, synonymously called saddle seat lift. There are also combination models consisting of a sit lift and a stand lift.

The requirements for stair lift installation are different for a stand-up lift than for a sit-down and curved lift. While a minimum ceiling height of 2.25 metres instead of the usual one metre protects the user's head when standing, the smaller minimum width of 70 centimetres is due to the construction of the lift itself.

Lifting platform

The lift differs from the platform lift in that it transports one or more persons vertically up and down the stairs. This vertical movement is used for stairs that have few steps or whose relative slope is above 70 degrees. This type of stairlift is also offered as a lift or hoist.

Hinweis

Slopes to be overcome on stairs that are above 70 degrees offer less safety for sit-to-stand and platform lifts that run diagonally, as stronger forces act on the linkage. The lift is firmly installed in a foundation and travels vertically - the two factors that favour this aspect.

Depending on the individual requirements, a lifting platform can be accessed from several sides via two or three ramps. If the wheelchair user drives up on one side, it is possible to drive straight out on the opposite side on the other level, so that the wheelchair user can continue straight ahead and does not have to drive or manoeuvre backwards. The ramps should be kept as flat as possible so that the wheelchair user does not have to exert much force. The lift system can be operated via an interior control as well as elements on the interior and exterior wall of the lift system. There are also smart-home lifts for wheelchair users. These have control via smartphone, which is advantageous for use by several people.  Safety features vary between models:

  • Retaining railings
  • End walls along the lift
  • Emergency stop switch
  • Safety bar

The lift has a platform that provides enough space for one person and additional equipment such as walking aids. The lifting capacity of this lift system reaches up to 300 kilograms and is even suitable for users of electric wheelchairs, which are heavier than mechanical wheelchairs. Because of the conversion work involved, a lift for wheelchair users requires careful consideration of the benefits and the local conditions. If a lift is not absolutely necessary, then it is not installed and another lift system is installed, as the lift is one of the most expensive lift systems. However, its price is justified by its particularly high load-bearing capacity and the wide range of design options. Speaking of design possibilities: There are even stairs for outdoor use that convert into lifts at the push of a button!

Conclusion

The overview of the stairlift types has shown that the large selection means that a suitable stairlift is available for every individual case: from narrow staircases and outdoor use to high load capacity requirements, everything is covered! An on-site inspection by the manufacturer and a custom-fit design of the stairlift ensure absolute safety and a high level of comfort in use. The easy-to-understand operation of the lift rounds off the overall package attractively.

Stairlift costs: Individual, variable and high - but there are solutions!

The purchase of a stairlift requires a considerable financial outlay. This applies to both new and used stairlifts. However, the decision to buy a stairlift results from a situation that justifies the high prices: The desire to maintain quality of life and self-determination and to remain in one's own four walls. Stays in a home, being dependent on the support of other people and low self-esteem should not even be up for discussion. Thus, investing in a stair lift is much more than just buying a care device - it is the key to a better life in old age! This is something worth paying the price for. Especially as there is scope to keep the price down.

Stairlift prices: About the individual models

Stairlift prices vary with the respective system. For a seat lift, a flat rate of €3,000 to €8,000 can be expected for straight stairs. In the case of a curved stair lift, double this amount should be expected due to the manoeuvrable steps of the staircase and the more complex production. A platform lift ranges in price from 9,000 to 18,000 €, a lift from 6,000 to 12,000 €. The external lift with the lift shaft is in another dimension in terms of price: at the peak, amounts of 100,000 € are not uncommon.

Without a doubt, these price ranges should only be understood as estimates. Although they are based on an extensive stairlift price comparison as well as several stairlift cost experiences, individual details are already able to push up the cost structure. For example, a seat lift for a straight staircase costs just under 3,000 to 8,000 euros for one floor. On the other hand, if the stairs run over several floors, the costs are estimated to be a third higher.

Alternatives to buying new: costs stairlift used, rented & leased

In addition to the new purchase, alternative financing models position themselves with initially promising prospects as far as potential savings are concerned. However, on closer inspection, these options turn out to be only partially economical. For example, stairlift rental has the disadvantage of high costs over a long period of use and a high one-off payment at the beginning. Estimates for the monthly contributions are between 100 and 150 €. In the long run, the costs add up so that renting becomes more expensive than buying a new stairlift.

Of all the alternatives, the used stairlift is the most likely to be a lucrative investment. If you buy from professional dealers or manufacturers, you get high quality at a price saving of up to 50% compared to buying new. The biggest saving is when buying second-hand from a private individual on Ebay. Such a purchase is risky, however, as installation and assembly are not supported and functionality, safety and useful life are not guaranteed and are uncertain.

Then there is leasing: this is particularly useful for companies. Compared to renting, it opens up more possibilities for the time after the contract expires and also does not involve the high one-off payments of a rent. The disadvantage of leasing is that the contract cannot be terminated.

We therefore come to the following conclusions regarding the alternatives to buying a new stairlift:

  1. Buying a used stairlift turns out to be the most promising alternative.
  2. Hiring a stairlift is only lucrative for short periods of use and simple requirements.
  3. Leasing the stairlift is a company matter.

Grants and subsidies: The role of health insurance funds, the state and associations

The stairlift costs are one side of the coin. The other side of the coin are the subsidies and grants that can considerably reduce the costs of the stairlift: On the one hand, the health insurance companies - depending on the respective level of care - are obliged to pay. This is because anyone who pays into a health and long-term care insurance scheme is entitled to the corresponding benefits when medical necessity arises. On the other hand, in addition to the health insurance companies, the state and associations are a contact point for stairlift financing.

The stair lift costs covered by health insurance: Depending on the care level

As a measure to improve the living environment and to create accessibility, the health insurance fund may contribute to the stair lift costs. The stair lift costs are dependent on several factors:

  • Care level
  • Number of persons affected
  • Existing barriers in the home

Let's take a closer look at these aspects together. In this way, you will be able to evaluate the stairlift subsidy for your individual case appropriately before you apply for support.

Good news for affected persons: The stair lift health insurance cost coverage already applies from the first care degree. Due to a major reform in the care sector on 01.01.2017, the degree contains new provisions. In order to meet these requirements, it is necessary that a person is at least slightly limited in their independence. When assessing the limitations, the focus is not on the time involved, but on the person concerned per se. In the assessment procedure, a minimum score of 12.5 is required to fall into the first care degree. The assessment procedure for the evaluation of the care degree is called NBA for short and is carried out by an assessor. This assessor distributes points for six categories that are tested on the person concerned, which define the extent of the restriction. These six points are:

  • Mobility
  • Cognitive and communicative abilities
  • Behavioural and psychological problems
  • Self-care
  • Dealing with stress caused by illness and therapy
  • Shaping everyday life

LADE ...
©Bild von Robert Kneschke/Shutterstock_1070373494 auf Alterix

If the result of the NBA is at least care level 1, the stairlift subsidy for the person in need of care is €4,000, which, depending on the model, even finances the complete stairlift including conversion measures. For more expensive models, there is no support beyond the €4,000. The amount of support also does not change if the person concerned has a higher care degree. Thus, the stairlift cost reimbursement health insurance per person always remains the same - per person! - This is exactly where a small loophole is hidden, which households should make use of if there are several eligible persons living there...

If there are between two and four  persons, the stairlift subsidies can be combined. This means that if there are two people, a grant of €8,000 is possible, while if there are three and four people, the grants are €12,000 and €16,000 respectively. However, it is a condition that each of the persons is dependent on a stairlift and has at least the first care degree. However, it is impossible to receive more than € 16,000 in stairlift subsidies even if more than four people are eligible and live in the same household.

Hinweis

Please note that all conversion measures in connection with the stairlift are legally considered as one measure and the complete subsidy amount is granted for this. If you have to modify the door frame because of the stairlift, the modification of the door frame is included in the stairlift subsidy amount and is not supported separately.

The stair lift costs covered by health insurance: Depending on the care level

Care degrees or not, there are no subsidies for stair lifts if the existing barriers in the house or flat do not meet certain criteria. One of these two cases must be given: on the one hand, the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom must be on different floors, on the other hand, steps leading to the front door are another criterion. In addition, the person with at least the first degree of care must be so mobility-impaired that he or she cannot climb the steps without a stair lift. If these criteria are met, then all doors are open to stair lift financing through the health insurance fund.

If you do not have a care degree, it is recommended that you first apply for a degree. This is free of charge and, if approved, offers you the prospect of further benefits in addition to the stair lift subsidy. These include the care allowance for family members providing care, the subsidies for care aids and the subsidies for full inpatient care. Furthermore, there are other financing options in addition to the stairlift health insurance co-payment.

Promotional bank with far-reaching assistance: The KfW Stairlift Grant

Kfw-Bank provides financial assistance for several measures. These measures are defined in the so-called Investment Grant 455 and Loan 159 (Age-Appropriate Conversion). All flats and houses are eligible for the Kfw Stairlift Grant, provided that they are not used as accommodation. Furthermore, use of the grant for the purpose of debt restructuring is prohibited.

Kfw Bank has defined its own standard for the term "age-appropriate house". If the criteria of this standard are met, Kfw-Bank is prepared to provide financial assistance for the conversion measures. The criteria are as follows:

  • Installation of lifts or stair lifts to enable barrier-free access.
  • Reduction of existing barriers in the house (e.g. removal of door thresholds)
  • Barrier-free design of the kitchen and bathroom (e.g. spacious shower cubicles with handles for wheelchair users)
  • Facilitating the overcoming of level differences (e.g. installation of ramp systems)
  • Integration of operating elements that simplify everyday life (e.g. communication aids).

Full support and thus the "Age-appropriate house" standard is only granted to those properties that meet the criteria mentioned. Individual measures are supported within a lower financial framework: Individual measures that meet the criteria of Kfw-Bank are supported within the framework of the "Age-appropriate conversion" grant. This grant is alternatively known as "Grant 455-B" and "Barrier Reduction - Investment Grant". The catch with this subsidy is the high demand. For this reason, Kfw-Bank itself appeals to you to apply as soon as possible - as long as funding is available. Especially if you already have concrete plans, the prospects of receiving the investment grant are good.

The possible amount of the grant is between 1,500 and 6,250 euros and covers part of the costs.

Barrier reduction with individual measures:

  • Conversion of paths related to one's own building (e.g. garden paths, garage paths).
  • Age-appropriate parking spaces (e.g. for cars, walkers, prams)
  • in the apartment/house (e.g. lift systems, bathroom conversions, assistance systems for everyday life)

Conversion in the sense of the "Age-appropriate House" standard:

  • Individual measures that contribute to compliance with or fulfilment of the standard "Age-appropriate house".
  • Lifts, stair lifts, ramp systems and much more!

Purchase of barrier-free housing:

  • The purchase of housing that has been converted in accordance with the principles of the Kfw programmes can be subsidised by Kfw.This requires separate proof of the costs of the conversion in the purchase contract.

Kfw Bank also promotes burglary protection with up to EUR 1,600 per housing unit. This can be flexibly combined with other promotional funds. In addition to the repayment-free grant, there is also a low-interest loan of up to 50,000 euros.

Measures Subsidy
Standard "Age-appropriate house
  • 12.5 % of the eligible costs
  • Maximum of 6,250 € per housing unit
Individual measures for barrier reduction
  • 10 % of the eligible costs
  • Maximum 5,000 € per housing unit
Burglary protection
  • 10 % of the eligible costs
  • Maximum € 1,500 per housing unit

The stairlift subsidy  is available from Kfw-Bank under various funding programmes. This applies to both individual measures and extensive conversions of one's own property. Due to the high demand, it is advisable to apply as early as possible with concrete plans for the targeted measures. If the subsidy is not sufficient, there are possible combinations with the health insurance subsidy for stair lifts and the loans offered by Kfw-Bank as solutions. The loans offer favourable conditions and are an attractive option, especially for expensive lift systems.

Other sources for stairlift financing

LADE ...
©Bild von Christin Klose/Shutterstock_1136327759 auf Alterix

If the stairlift is necessary as a result of an accident, new financing options may open up:

  • Employer's Liability Insurance Association: Mobility impairments as a result of accidents at work.
  • Accidents caused by others: Under certain circumstances, the liability insurance of the person who caused the accident may pay - or the person may have to pay for the damage themselves.
  • War victims' welfare: In the case of military or war injuries

If the application is rejected by all parties, the Social Welfare Office (Sozialamt) is the next port of call: under special circumstances, it will assume the costs. On the one hand, there must be an expected long-term use as well as a demonstrable lack of creditworthiness. Secondly, only the cheapest lift is subsidised by the social welfare office.

Stairlift tax deductible

If the stair lift is a medical measure, then take advantage of the tax deductibility! A certificate from your family doctor confirming the medical necessity of the stair lift should suffice as proof. In your tax return, you can enter the stair lift as an extraordinary expense. Alternatively, your tax advisor will take care of your concerns, inform you in this regard and take care of the tax return.

Conclusion

The overview of funding options reveals that there are ways to achieve stairlift funding. There are even subsidies available that pay for the entire stairlift, but this is an exception. As a rule, a part of the stairlift costs is covered, which relieves you and your relatives. In all cases, health insurance, Kfw-Bank, the state and, under certain circumstances, professional associations, liability insurances and the social welfare office are helpful points of contact for financing the stair lift. Finally, the advantage of tax deductibility completes the overall package.

Buying a used stairlift: safe option or risky trade?

With prices for new stairlifts soaring, the search for alternatives is in full swing. Government subsidies and tax deductibility already offer some prospects for savings. But at the same time, a second-hand stairlift offers great savings potential.

What does "used" even mean?

As stairlifts are made to measure, the question of the usability of a used stairlift arises. A used stairlift does not mean a completely used product. Instead, the stairlift only contains individual elements that are used. These are, for example, the following:

  • Seat
  • Electric motor
  • For a straight stairlift, part of the rails
  • Safety elements
  • Control units

Consequently, the number of used elements can be high - can be because the individual domestic conditions such as the course and width of the stairs are different for each customer. For this reason, as with the new construction of a stair lift, an on-site inspection is first carried out by the manufacturer for the used version. The manufacturer then assesses the requirements and selects the most suitable used stairlift, which is then specially prepared for the customer. A used stairlift therefore contains partly new and partly used elements.

You may feel a little queasy when you hear about second-hand elements. This is because the safety requirements are elementary. In this respect, the used stairlift gives plenty of all-clear: wearing parts are replaced and the stairlift is subjected to an all-round check. This takes place in the course of an extensive cycle that extends from the purchase to the resale of the stairlift by the manufacturer.

Used stairlifts at Circle of Life

After a stairlift has completed its first cycle of use, it is either disposed of or sold. The family or person selling the stairlift will then approach a manufacturer. In addition to the purchase of a used lift, returns from rental installations flow into this step. Once accepted by the manufacturer, the next step is as follows:

  1. Initial testing for functionality
  2. Reconditioning with the replacement of wear parts
  3. Cleaning in a special washing plant
  4. General overhaul of the upholstery
  5. Inspection of all individual plastic & metal parts and replacement if necessary.
  6. Reassembly with extensive tests to put the lift through its paces.
  7. Sale of the newly refurbished lift after adaptation to the buyer
  8. Professional assembly at the new owner
  9. Detailed instruction in the use of the lift including written operating instructions.

This strict procedure shows that the safety precautions do not deviate by a millimetre from those of a new stairlift. Otherwise, the manufacturer would run the risk of being held liable for accidents resulting from construction errors.

Safety standards and warranty statements

The described theory and practice are followed by several proofs for the safety of used stairlifts. Concise safety standards are the type examination and the CE certification. The type examination is a procedure in which all the necessary tests are carried out by a test centre to determine whether a particular product complies with the EU directives and standards. Before this test, the product is not placed on the market. If the product passes the test, it receives the meaningful CE certification.

This relevant safety feature for second-hand stairlifts is rounded off by guarantee declarations for the product. Depending on the dealer and manufacturer, these are valid for up to three years after purchase.

The advantages and disadvantages of a used stairlift

LADE ...
©Bild von Nina Alizadan/Shutterstock_1101643691 auf Alterix

Advantages: Cost savings and environmental balance

On the side of the typical advantages of a used stairlift, there are above all the cost savings and the positive effects on the environmental balance. In terms of cost savings, there is even a potential of 50% compared to a new purchase. This is a considerable financial relief, especially as the purchase of a stairlift is usually necessitated suddenly by an event and is not planned long in advance. Because the used stairlift is just as eligible for a subsidy as a new model, there are further financial advantages.

Reconditioning an existing model has less of an impact on the environment than buying a new one. Whereas a new purchase requires a completely new production and thus results in higher material consumption, buying a used lift system is more environmentally friendly.

Disadvantages: Dubious offers on portals

If you want to buy a used stairlift, there are two popular places to start: On the one hand, portals for a private purchase, such as used stairlifts Ebay, and on the other, portals with offers from specialist dealers.

Beware of buying a used stairlift on Ebay, as this private purchase does not include professional dismantling, reconditioning and assembly. You can find models for around 1,000 €, but since they come from private sellers, they have no responsibility towards you and offer no guarantee. Before you make a bad investment and incur horrendous follow-up costs, the search on portals with specialised dealers is the better solution.

In addition to the important safety standards and high-quality service, such portals offer you sufficient savings opportunities. However, since the offers of the manufacturers vary widely, it is advisable to compare the prices on at least three of these portals.

Compact overview of the advantages and disadvantages of a used stair lift

Advantages:

  • Cost saving compared to buying new
  • Professional reconditioning
  • Positive contribution to the environmental balance
  • Safety, guarantee & subsidy in the event of purchase from a specialist dealer

Disadvantages:

  • High risks when buying privately via portals such as Ebay
  • Extensive comparison of different offers on specialist dealer portals required

Conclusion

In our experience, used stairlifts are only a good option if the stairlift is a straight stairlift. If, on the other hand, the staircase has curves, then the reconditioning of the stairlift is so time-consuming that the savings are relatively small. Accordingly, the approximate rule of thumb is: if you are looking for a stair lift for a straight staircase, look around among the second-hand models! However, if there are more complex designs such as the curved lift or the various forms of platform lifts, then buying new or renting is the option of first choice. The keyword "rental" already brings us to the next topic.

Rent a stairlift: Suitable interim solution and expensive compromise?

Several stairlift rental experiences show that renting is only worthwhile for three to four years. From then on, the rental costs exceed the purchase costs. The bottom line is that the shorter the rental period, the more economical it is. All the advantages of a rented stairlift are to be found in such a short period of time.

When the rent knows how to convince

A rental is suitable for bridging temporary mobility restrictions for people after operations and in the case of expected or possible recovery. Stairlift hire is also a viable option in the case of illness & complaints that are difficult to assess. However, if it becomes apparent after months that the condition will not improve and the stairlift is necessary in the long term, then the rental should be discontinued immediately, as it will be too expensive in the long term.

Our Opinion

Jörg has suffered a stroke and is paralysed on the left side of his entire body. He is 42 years old. Based on his age, examinations and experience, doctors consider Jörg's chances of recovery to be good. It can be assumed that he will be rehabilitated within the next few months. In this case, a stairlift rental makes sense. The situation would be different for a 69-year-old Jörg, who had already had five strokes before and had come out of therapy with permanent damage each time. Since another stroke is not unlikely and the paralysis may remain permanent, the purchase of a lift system is recommended.

However, this fact alone does not adequately address the decision to rent a stairlift. In addition to the question of the potential duration of a rental, the financial situation, the course of the staircase and the desired type of lift all play a role in the decision-making process.

Should the purchase of a stairlift prove too expensive, renting a stairlift may be the only solution even for longer periods of time. This is because while paying a large premium all at once is too costly for many people, regulated and moderate monthly payments prove to be the viable option. Furthermore, the tenant benefits from free assembly and dismantling as well as maintenance and repair costs included in the contract.

The course of the stairs has an influence on the necessary lift system. This in turn influences the costs. Roughly speaking, the more complicated the lift system is to build and install, the less lucrative the rent. It is one thing to hire a straight stairlift over one floor, but quite another to have a lift made to measure at a height of three metres with a fixed foundation and then to hire it. With this in mind, here is some advice:

Lift system Rent? Buy?
Stairlift straight stairs For short periods of use: Yes For long periods of use
Stairlift spiral staircase No Yes
Stand-up lift For short periods of use: Yes For long periods of use
Platform lift/lift/outdoor lift No Yes

A short period of use is defined as three to four years of use of the stairlift. Up to this point, renting is still financially worthwhile, but above this point it is more worthwhile to buy. The more complex the lift system - platform lift, lift, stairlift spiral staircase - the shorter the period of time during which a rental would be financially profitable.

Stairlift hire price: one-off payment and ongoing charges

The price of renting a stairlift is made up of two components: A one-off payment and ongoing charges. While the ongoing fees are part of the monthly rent and are self-explanatory, the background to the one-off payment should be explained here. This covers the following costs:

  • Delivery
  • assembly & later disassembly
  • Custom-made products

The custom-made products in particular are the most expensive, which is why a stair lift for hire is only recommended for a straight flight of stairs. This is because in the case of a straight staircase, the manufacturing costs for the rails are low, resulting in a low one-off payment before the rental. In the case of curved staircases and platform lifts, on the other hand, the one-off payment before rental can even be half the purchase price!

As pricing is a completely individual matter, we do not wish to give any general information on the stairlift hire price here, just like the manufacturers and dealers. We ask for your understanding

Stairlift hire lease: What are the differences?

In addition to renting, there is also the option of leasing. The process is initially similar to that of renting: a contract is concluded with a specific term. In contrast to renting, early termination of the contract is only possible for a fee. This results in a limitation of leasing. Further restrictions lurk in the period of use: the customer must pay for maintenance and repair costs himself.

At the end of the period of use, there are three perspectives on how to proceed. One is to hand over the unit, as is also usual with a lease. The other two perspectives are unique to leasing: on the one hand, the stairlift can be replaced with a new unit by concluding a separate leasing contract; on the other hand, there is the option to purchase at the current residual value. In addition, the one-time rental fee that exists in most leasing contracts is waived upon conclusion of the contract. This makes the leasing model particularly suitable for people who cannot afford a stairlift at the present time. In this way, the leasing period with monthly contributions provides for the bridging of the period in which the amount for the purchase of the stairlift can be saved after expiry of the leasing contract. It is important to bear in mind that the leasing fees and the purchase value exceed the acquisition costs of a new stairlift.

hint

Leasing a stair lift is useful for companies that want to provide barrier-free access to the company building for employees as well as guests. As the monthly leasing fees are allocated to running costs in accounting, there are advantages to renting. Rental fees are more complicated in terms of tax deductibility.

Conclusion

Renting a stair lift is an obvious solution in the case of a seat lift for a straight staircase; especially if the financial strength for a new purchase is not given or it is a temporary solution for up to four years. For curved stairs and platform lifts, on the other hand, the purchase of a new model is the only financially recommendable option in the long term. For companies, leasing proves to be an attractive financing model with regard to tax legislation.

Perspectives in stairlift design

Although the medical benefit of a stairlift is the main focus, the stairlift becomes part of one's own four walls at the time of installation. A design that is coherent with the rest of the house increases the feel-good factor for everyone. In principle, you can think of a stairlift - purely from a design point of view - as the purchase of a new piece of furniture. The following aspects, among others, are important in such a new purchase:

  • Adaptation to the style of your own four walls
  • Colour match with other furniture
  • Spatial conditions for harmonious integration

Fortunately, the manufacturers provide you with far-reaching perspectives for integrating stair lifts harmoniously into your interior design!

About the stairlift design and its possibilities

When it comes to the choice of colours, the individual manufacturers offer you a complete range: In addition to matt green and pink shades, there are even elegant and high-gloss bordeaux and brown for the upholstery. There are also plain colours such as white and beige. Other colours in various shades allow the upholstery to be adapted to almost any interior design.

Things get more complicated, however, when it comes to the armrests and backrests as well as the supports: These are increasingly available in standard colours such as brown, black, white and grey. They are usually colour-matched to the tubes and other elements. However, manufacturers from abroad in particular offer some unusual variants with models such as Capri by Vimec. Accordingly, there are backrests and armrests in mahogany motifs here, which even blend in seamlessly with Art Deco styles. As a friend of modern furnishings, you will also find what you are looking for, as there are highly innovative lifts. In addition to convenient smartphone control features, these include a suitably futuristic design that says "Goodbye!" to dull corners and edges and conjures up creative transitions between the individual elements of the stair lift.

The spatial conditions should also be mentioned: These play a role in the design because they decide how much space a stairlift takes up. In this respect, the possibilities are somewhat limited. The reason for this is that a stairlift, as a medically necessary part of the house, must be given priority and placed at the respective staircase. Although the various types of stairlift offer possibilities for variation and thus partial adaptation to the spatial conditions, the wheel cannot be reinvented. Consequently, you have to compromise on the seat itself, even if you are reluctant to do so because of the spatial conditions. One consolation at this point is the folding function, which is available depending on the stairlift model. The folding function allows you to fold the stair lift in a space-saving manner.

Where you have more leeway, however, is in the design of the tubes. These are available in narrow versions so that they take up little space from surrounding furniture or decoration on the wall side. All of these design options are only available with new stairlifts, which you either buy, rent or lease. Used stairlifts remain the same except for reconditioning and changing or adding certain elements.

The stair lift for outdoor stairs provides less scope in terms of design options than described above for indoor lifts. One reason for this is the choice of materials: Whereas materials and colours were still freely selectable for indoor stairlifts in the section above, this is hardly the case for outdoor stairlifts. Although manufacturers strive for variety, a stair lift for outdoor stairs must first and foremost be able to withstand weather conditions that vary throughout the year. This means that some materials and colours are not available. Furthermore, many colours are not available because manufacturers assume that users of a stairlift outside the house want a model that is less conspicuous in terms of passers-by and neighbours.

Where you have even less scope for outdoor design is with an outdoor lift with a lift shaft. Such stair lifts require conversion measures that affect entire neighbourhoods and, in apartment blocks, numerous other residents. Due to the many necessary approvals and possible coordination with legal regulations such as the protection of historical monuments, the design can only be planned in nuances.

Conclusion

While the stairlift outside comes with its individual limitations, stairlifts for indoors offer a considerable choice in almost every conceivable design aspect. This only applies on condition that a new stairlift is purchased. Because unlike used and existing lift systems, new lifts can be configured according to one's own wishes.

Stairlift test: clues to assessing the quality

The safety of a stairlift is determined by its quality. Safety is guaranteed by choosing the right model. There are many cheap stairlifts on the foreign market in particular, but they do not meet the quality guidelines and safety requirements. So before you buy, do a stairlift test by looking at the following quality features...

Feature #1: Stairlift comparison based on quality seals

There are four seals of approval that can be used to indicate the quality of a stairlift:

  • CE seal as a sign of quality products with permission to be introduced into the European market.
  • TÜV seal as proof of flawless technical function and safety control
  • GS seal as proof of compliance with the requirements of the Product Safety Act
  • "Geprüfte Fachkraft Barrierefreie Installation und Montage" (Certified Specialist for Barrier-Free Installation and Assembly) as a test mark for craft businesses for the installation of stairlifts that employ trained specialists.

Feature #2: Stairlift equipment

A high-quality lift system has numerous mechanisms and parts that serve the safety of people and its own functionality. The more of the following the stairlift contains, the safer it is:

  • Safety belt
  • Battery drive for emergencies
  • Emergency stop
  • Automatic stop
  • Child safety lock
  • Most flexible & innovative operation (joysticks, smartphone etc.)

Feature #3: The choice of supplier

Last but not least - with the first two features and their aspects in mind - take a closer look at the individual stairlift providers in your stairlift test. At this point we would like to point out our surprise for you, which you may have already noticed at the top of the website: our configurator! Further interesting facts about stairlifts

Building the stairlift yourself: Flash of genius or insanity?

There are a number of forums where people ask whether building a stair lift themselves makes sense. There are also providers of books and similar works that explain the art of building your own stairlift. One of them is even available for purchase on Amazon as an ebook with a volume of 4,500 pages. But we don't link you to this material, because we at Alterix have a clear opinion:
A stairlift belongs exclusively in the hands of professionals!

The aspects of safety and comfort weigh so heavily that building your own stair lift would not be able to cover them. Just imagine what would happen if you misjudged the load-bearing capacity of the wall: then the dear granny or mother for whom you built the stair lift would fall down together with the wall. We at Alterix take a clear stand here: of course a stairlift is an investment with high costs! However, these costs are justified, as the aid provides far-reaching support in everyday life! A do-it-yourself construction - craftsmanship or not - never guarantees the safety as a professional model, because besides the shell with the local conditions and the technology as well as emergency systems, many components have to be fulfilled, which require the use of different trades!

No joke: It's better to leave it to the experts to build the stair lift themselves, otherwise grandma will crash down!

Mobile stairlift as an inexpensive option

In addition to the extensive and permanently installed lift systems, there are much cheaper and simpler lift variants available on the market. These are called stair caterpillars and stair climbing aids. Available in various models, these are suitable with or without a seat for wheelchair users, people with walking aids and people with other limitations. The downside of these systems is that they can only be operated by another person. This person steers and supports the respective lift system, while it masters the stairs by itself using an electric motor. In principle, these stair lifts are therefore only suitable in places that are seldom visited, in order to cope with small staircases. They are less suitable as a permanent solution in one's own home, unless a helper is present.
A mobile stair lift is an excellent addition to the lift system at home to ensure accessibility in public places as well. Unfortunately, there are many places in public today that are still not wheelchair accessible. This is where the mobile stair lift comes in as a solution: Because it can usually be folded and stored in the boot. This way, you can take it out at any time when it becomes necessary in a public building or elsewhere and help the person you are accompanying to overcome the barriers.

Wusstest du schon?

Are you looking for accessible places? Then take a look at the Wheelmap! This is a project of the Sozialhelden, a non-profit company from Berlin, and offers you an overview of various listed accessible places. There you can discover cafés, event locations and other areas that are easily accessible with a wheelchair. You activate the location search on your smartphone and let it navigate you to the desired place. Simply ingenious, isn't it?

Insight into stairlift installation

There are many discussions about stairlift installation: Some claim that they can install the stairlift themselves and just have it delivered. The background to this approach is the savings in the cost of installation. Others, on the other hand, take a clear stand against installing the stairlift themselves, arguing that it would be very time-consuming - and they are right!

Stairlift installation is particularly demanding because a stairlift has to be installed at precise angles. This requires balancing by several people. The crux of the whole matter is that the subsequent tightening of the individual elements causes the angle settings to shift. This means that they have to be readjusted regularly, which requires rebalancing. If the technology in the housing is then programmed incorrectly, inflationary optimistic do-it-yourselfers have the salad.

Is this effort worth the additional costs of installation? No. Professional installers charge just under 50 € per hour in the most favourable fees, which includes travel time, but still results in a favourable total bill in the end. All in all, you have to calculate with 200 to 300 € for the separate installation. For that, the people know what they are doing. And they do it right!

Please calculate 1 plus 1.
